Serenity, Wildlife, and Ancient Trees Await
Experience the Pocomoke River: An Unforgettable Bayou Adventure Near Ocean City, MD
If you want to experience a completely different side of the Eastern Shore, leave the beach and boardwalk behind for a morning. While many visitors stick to the salty, open waters of the coast, my Pocomoke River kayak tours take you deep into an ancient, primeval wilderness that feels much like the heart of a Southern Bayou.
It is the perfect choice for families, birdwatchers, photographers and anyone searching for peaceful things to do in Ocean City, Maryland for couples who want to experience untouched nature.
What Makes the Pocomoke River Tour Entirely Distinct?
If you have already paddled my coastal wetland tours, the Pocomoke offers a total change of scenery, wildlife and atmosphere. Rather than navigating wide open salt marshes, you’ll be gliding down a deep and calm freshwater river defined by features found nowhere else in the region:
- Ancient Cypress Borders: While the river channel itself is wide open to the sun and sky, the banks are lined with towering Bald Cypress trees. You’ll weave along the river’s edge through a maze of knobby Cypress knees protruding from the water, creating a backdrop reminiscent of the Jurassic time when dinosaurs roamed the world.
- The Famous Black Water: Named after the Algonquin word for “black water,” the river boasts a rich, dark amber hue. This unique coloration is entirely natural, caused by the organic tannic acids leached from the surrounding swamp forest.
- Surprising Depth: Don’t let the quiet, glass like surface of the river fool you. The Pocomoke is celebrated as one of the deepest rivers in the world relative to its width, plunging down up to 45 feet beneath your kayak.
Wildlife of the Freshwater Floodplain
Because the river channel is wide open to the sky, it provides incredible visibility for birding and wildlife viewing. As we paddle downriver, your local guide and naturalist will help you spot:
- Vibrant Birdlife: Peer into the sunlit tree line to spot the brilliant yellow Prothonotary Warblers, Pileated Woodpeckers (the largest woodpecker in North America), Bald Eagles and Osprey soaring overhead looking for their next meal. Keep your voices low to listen for the unique sounds of the Yellow billed Cuckoo and Wood Thrush. Paddling on the Pocomoke is a full sensory experience!
- River Mammals and Reptiles: Keep your eyes peeled on the banks and sunny logs for white tailed deer, River Otters, Beavers, turtles and harmless Northern Watersnakes.
- Wild Flora: Depending on the season, paddle past blooming wild Iris, Swamp Mallow, Elderberry, native Magnolia, and one of my favorites, Sweetspire
